COMMUNITY RESIDENTIAL HOME "P'TEH KNIOUM - MY HOUSE", STUNG TRENG

NEW Project in 2012

Partnering with an Austrian church, CRY has committed to build a new children’s home in Cambodia. Marcia Hammond, CRY’s representative in Asia and founder of the successful Waiting Houses for pregnant women in Cambodia, discovered a desperate need for a safe environment to house needy children in Strung Treng Province. Although there are a number of ‘orphanages’ in Cambodia already, CRY’s intention is to provide a residential home using the ‘family unit’ model which has been successful in other CRY projects, such as the Home of Hope in Albania and Father’s House in Ukraine. The idea is to build a safe environment where the children will experience love and care within a family unit. Where appropriate, children with relatives will be supported accordingly.

The build of “P’teh Knioum” meaning “My House” residential home will commence in January 2012 and will house 30 children from the age of four upwards. As well as orphans, the children will come from poor backgrounds where parents are not able to take care of them, some will be victims of violence and abuse.

The Home will offer these children an opportunity to make something of their lives by providing them with the love, care and assistance they deserve in life. It will also provide each child with an education along with health promotion (such as sexual health education with particular emphasis on HIV/AIDS awareness). The children will be encouraged to stay in education for as long as possible. However, if this is not practical, alternatives such as vocational training opportunities will be provided. The Home will also endeavour to reunite the children with their families whenever possible, giving them continuing support and after-care.

"BUY A BRICK" APPEAL FOR CAMBODIA

CRY urgently needs an additional £40,000 to be able to fund the construction of our new “P’teh Knioum” (My Home) Community Children’s Home in the remote northern province of Stung Treng, Cambodia. Will you please consider “buying a brick” for just £20 (US$30). You won’t receive a brick(!), but you will be helping us to change a needy child’s life forever, and helping uplift a whole community. 100% of your donation will go directly to this project. I WANT TO BUY A BRICK

For each brick bought you will also be entered into a prize draw for a luxury hamper (winning entry will be drawn when either £40K has been raised, or 31 August 2012 latest).

And if you would like to stay connected with the project after the Home has opened, you might like to consider sponsoring a CHILD or PROJECT  under our well-established SPONSORSHIP PROGRAMMES. Please CONTACT US to register your interest and we will keep you informed of when the sponsorship programmes in Cambodia will become available.

"HAPPY PARENTS - HAPPY CHILDREN" SCHOOL & COMMUNITY PROJECT, STUNG TRENG

NEW Project in 2012

In February 2010 an official request was made to CRY by the Director of the Provincial Office of Educational Youth and Sport in Stung Treng, outlining the urgent need for a new school in Phum Kroham village in the Province of Stung Treng, in north-east Cambodia, including the provision of drinking water and sanitation. The main focus is to increase parity of access to primary education for the children aged 5-12 in that village.

The existing school building is in a dilapidated condition and completely unusable for long periods of time in particular the rainy season, when the school is flooded. Therefore, in this critical period of learning and development, there is no continuity for these village children. As a result of this, they soon lose interest in learning and eventually stop attending school altogether.

The aim of the project is to provide a safe place for 139 children of Phum Kroham Village to freely access local education. The project will also encourage community involvement and include health promotion to the village population and teaching of life-skills to men and women of the village.
Funding has been successfully secured for the development of this project over a three-year period.

WAITING HOUSES & MATERNITY CARE, STUNG TRENG, PREAH VIHEAR, RATANAKIRI & KRATIE

Current project

CRY’s activities in Cambodia have mainly been aimed at helping the government to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates.

Maternal Mortality Rates (MMR) stand as the highest in South East Asia and Cambodia has the second highest with 540 mothers who die per 100,000  live births (reported figure of 470 adjusted by UNICEF, WHO and UNFPA to account for underreporting and misclassification of maternal deaths). MMR is particularly high amongst younger mothers and their newly born babies (infant mortality rate 89 per 1000 live birth). It is estimated that 2,000 Cambodian women die each year of childbirth-related causes, and another 200,000 have their health seriously and adversely affected due to pregnancy and delivery related complications. The main reasons for this are: the lack of emergency services to reach the women in the villages; lack of adequate roads to get the women to referral hospitals; and malnutrition. Most young women in labour are helped by local unskilled birth attendees, which results in high maternal and infant mortality rates.

CRY supports the development and building of ‘Waiting Houses’ for pregnant women, providing a safe environment for women with complication in pregnancy. CRY also provides necessary furnishing and equipment in the Waiting House, so that the women and their partners are comfortable whilst awaiting a healthy pregnancy outcome.

CRY also provides a comprehensive program of training to women in the villages, so that they would be aware of the local services and how to access them; training to medical and midwifery staff, so that they are able to diagnose abnormal development in pregnancy, recognise the danger signs and refer them to the waiting houses where medical services are at hand.

In 2011 CRY Cambodia registered as an International Non Governmental organisation in with the Ministry of Foreign Affair and became an International 1NGO in Cambodia. CRY’s activities have always been in partnership and collaboration with local and national authorities, in particular with Provincial Health Department and the Ministry of Health. The registration will give CRY’s work a national recognition in Cambodia amongst other NGO’s in Cambodia.

CRY has developed a number of waiting house projects in Cambodia since 2007. Find out about these projects in more detail:
NATIONAL STRATEGIC DEVELOPMENT PLAN UPDATE 2009 - 2013 (Ministry of Planning Cambodia)
These statistics show that since the CRY Waiting Houses have been established in 2007, these Waiting Houses have started to make a significant difference by 2008. It is important to notice that the Waiting Houses are built in areas with a high poverty rate and high maternal and infant mortality rate.
