![]() THE KRATIE WAITING HOUSE IS CRY'S FOURTH AND NEWEST PROJECT IN CAMBODIA KRATIE WAITING HOUSE PROJECT 2011 The request to build a waiting house for women came directly from the Director of the Provincial Health Department, Doctor Chhneang in November 2009. CRY requested grant funding, which was successful in 2010. The building of the waiting house started in April 2011 and will be completed in September 2011. The opening ceremony will take place on the 9th September and will be attended by representatives of National Mother and Child, UNFPA, Local NGO’s and visiting CRY team from UK and Provincial Governor. It is hoped that this facility like the other waiting houses which CRY initiated, will provide valuable services and it will contribute to reduction of maternal and infant mortality rates. The waiting house will provide accommodation for women with complication in pregnancy, food for women and her partner and health promotion and health education during their stay. A CLOSER LOOK AT KRATIE Kratie is a province in north-eastern of The Kingdom of Cambodia. It borders Strung Treng province to the north, Mondulkiri province to the east, Kampong Cham province and Vietnam to the south, and Kampong Thom province to the west. The capital is Kraté city. It is subdivided into 5 districts (Chhloung, Kracheh, Preaek Prasab, Sambour and Snuol). It is 315 km from Phnom Penh by using National Road 7. Say Kratie to any Khmer and they'll reply dolphins -- in particular Mekong Irrawaddy Dolphins. Around 20km north of Kratie, at the village of Kampi, the swirling waters of the Mekong are considered to be the best place in the world to see the critically endangered Mekong Irrawaddy Dolphin. Dolphins aside, Kratie province is known for its pleasing riverside scenery and verdant villages and paddies. Nearly all who choose to stay here do so in the same-named provincial capital of Kratie -- an almost charming town with enough colonial architecture and tree-lined streets to warrant getting the camera out, a bunch of welcoming guesthouses and hotels and even a bar -- quite a novelty in these parts. The surrounding villages live up to your fantasies of lush, riverside Cambodia, with green paddies and beautifully polished stilted wooden homes shaded by thick palms. Demography of Kratie In 2004 the estimated population was 325 thousand persons and was 50% female. The population of children aged under 5 years was 46 thousand which was 14% of the total province population (NIS 2004). The Dependency Ratio (numbers of persons <15 years and 65 or over years per 100 adults aged 15-64 years) was 80. The total number of households in 2004 was 65 thousand, giving an average household size of 5.0 persons (MAFF 2004). The people of Kratie live in 5 districts composed of 46 communes and 250 villages (CDB 2004). The population density of the province is 29 persons/km2 compared to an average population density for Cambodia of 75 persons/km2. Kratie Provincial Health Department has 2 Operational Districts (ODs): Kratie Operational Districts: • Kratie Referral Hospital • 15 Health Center • 9 Health Post Chhlong Operational Districts: • Chhlong Referral Hospital • 8 Health Center • 1 Health Post THE NEED FOR THE WAITING HOUSE Although provincial city Kratie is a buzzing and prosperous little town, put a step outside the town you will see poverty which mostly affects women and children.According to the world food organisation mortality amongst children due to malnutrition is common. The estimate is that over 5,200 children aged uder five years died prematurely in Kratie in the five years to 2000. Over 600 infants aged under one year died in 1999. Maternal health care in Kratie Access to maternal health care services is of great importance to support maternal and child health and nutrition during pregnancy and at birth. Table 10.04.2 presents the percentages of pregnant women not having access to important maternal health care services in 2005. The lack of access to maternal health care services is a causal factor in the observed rates of child and maternal mortality and malnutrition in the province. Compared to the national level, the percentages of pregnant women not having access to antenatal care services was generally much higher than the national average. Compared to the national level, a much higher percentage of pregnant women in this province did not have babies delivered with a health professional and a similar percentage did not deliver babies in a health facility.

"A mother's well-being has a direct impact on her children's well-being. Similarly when one group fares poorly so does the other. For newborns, survival is directly linked to a mother's health during pregnancy" (CDHS 2000).
Ministry of Health

With Maternal and Child Mortality as the top priority of the Ministry of Health under the Rectangular Strategy of the Royal Government of Cambodia (Phase II), it is necessary that health staff at all levels combine efforts with health development partners to bring about a substantial reduction in mortality rates quickly. Speaking at the National Maternal and Child Health Center in Phnom Penh on 3 February 2009, H.E. Dr. MAM BUNHENG, Minister of Health called on health care providers to firmly adhere to internal regulations and their professional duties in order to provide the people of Cambodia, especially women and children and their care takers, with high quality of care.
