RATANAKIRI WAITING HOUSE PROJECT 2010
The request to build a waiting house for women came directly from Secretary of State for Health HE. Professor Eng Hout in May 2009. CRY requested grant funding, which was successful. The building of the waiting house was completed in September 2010 and the opening ceremony was attended by, representatives of National Mother and Child, UNFPA, Local NGO’s and visiting CRY team from UK and Provincial Governor.
Early indication shows that this facility will provide valuable services and it will contribute to reduction of maternal and infant mortality rates. The waiting house provides accommodation for women with complication in pregnancy, food for women and her partner and health promotion and health education during their stay.

Location of Ratanakiri in Cambodia

A CLOSER LOOK AT RATANAKIRI
Ratanakiri province is located in the North of Cambodia and it boarders to Laos to the North, Vietnam to the East, Mondulkiri province to the South and Stung Treng to the West. Ratanakiri is known for its tropical forest and natural resources and it is a main tourist attraction. One of these areas of interest is beautiful crater lake Yak Loum near Banlung. Majority of the population are Khmer Loeu, who are minority elsewhere in Cambodia.  Ratanakiri is amongst the least developed provinces of Cambodia. Its infrastructure is poor and the local government is remote from the central government. Health indicators in Ratanakiri are extremely poor, and almost one in four children dies before reaching the age of five. Education levels are also low; three quarters of the population is illiterate. (National Institute of Statistics, Ministry of Planning 2008).
Population
The population in Ratanakiri is 150,000 which is 1% of total population in Cambodia. Most of people in groups of 20 or 60 families live in the villages each have their own individual culture and languages. Main source of income is from subsistence farming and living off the resources from forest and fishing.
Like other areas of Cambodia, Ratanakiri has a monsoonal climate; the rainy season is from May to November, cool season, from November to January and the hot season from March to May.
Health
Health indicators in Rattanakiri are the worst in Cambodia. Ratanakiri has Cambodia’s highest rates of Maternal and Child mortality rates, National MMR 472 per 100,000 live birth (Cambodia National Institute of Statistics 2008), with 22.9 of Children dying before the age of Five. Malnutrition is also highest amongst the children and women in Ratanakiri. Poor state of health of population in Ratanakiri can be as a result of poverty, remoteness of villages, poor quality medical services, and language and cultural barriers that prevents village population access health care. There is one referral hospital in the capital city of Province Banlung, 10 health centres and 17 health posts. Medical equipment and supplies are scarce and staffing level inadequate and lacking motivation due to irregular and low salaries.
