CHILDHOOD IMMUNISATION BASE, ABYAN GOVERNATE

Last supported in 2010

In 2008 CRY was able to access a grant for the renovation of a building to provide a base for a childhood immunisation programme. This project has been initiated and managed by Partner Aid International.

The Abijan Governate has a population of 450,000 people, 34% of whom live below the poverty line. There is an estimated 15,000 children under a year old with a high mortality rate of 68 per 1000, mainly due to poor nutrition and a lack of systematic immunisation. TB, Diphtheria, Whooping Cough, Tetanus, Polio, are all major illnesses and causes of death among children. The immunisation rate is in reality much lower than the official 59% recorded by the government figures.

Although the grant was sent over in 2008 for the build of the base, the work has only made a faltering start in January 2009 due to administrative problems. The work on the centre was completed in 2009 and the project is now beginning to have an impact on the local community with the aim to increase the immunisation coverage to over 90% throughout the Governate. In 2010 it was reported that some of the original grant was still unspent and agreement was given to supporting local clinics in other regions. Also a request was received to support a shelter for Somali refugees (widows and children) and a donation was sent to cover immediate needs in 2010.
