Day Centre for Roma Gypsy Community
A grant awarded to CRY has enabled its partners, New Generation Church of Silistra, to purchase and renovate a dilapidated building in the heart of the local gypsy community - a shanty town where the very poor gypsy underclass live an almost ghetto lifestyle, excluded through invisible discrimination from the normal social provisions the Bulgarians enjoy.

These gypsies have their own language and speak little Bulgarian and have little or no representation to the local authorities so they tend to withdraw into their own community. Their accommodation is appalling with little or no hygiene and virtually no access to medical provision. They have few and only menial employment opportunities as employers give preference to Bulgarians, so they resort to stealing and begging. Children often don’t go to school where they will be treated badly.

This new resource center in the heart of their community, staffed by people who have worked among them voluntarily for the last 3 years, will provide representation to the authorities, possibilities of access to state provision of grants to improve accommodation, Bulgarian language classes, play opportunities for children, musical instrument practice, soup kitchen for exceptionally poor, job skills training, basic medical aid and advice provided etc.
