Good Shepherd Homes

In June 2006, Indian Express, India's leading national newspaper, published the UNAIDS report on the Global AIDS epidemic. This news was shocking to read with India the largest carrier of this virus in the world - in 2005 there were 400,000 reported deaths due to this virus and currently there are 5.7 million in India living with the disease.

Street kids in Mumbai, India

Around 500,000 people sleep daily on Mumbai’s streets. Many of these people are homeless and fall prey to paedophiles, viruses, infections and injuries. Scores of emergencies go without any medical help and consequently large numbers of children die prematurely. Many children with HIV/AIDS are viewed as 'no-hopers' and are rejected by hospitals as well as family due to fear and the stigma attached to AIDS. Consequently these children end up abandoned on the city streets.

Living on the streets, Mumbai, India

In India, CRY has partnered with Good Shepherd Homes (GSH) with whom we have worked before. GSH was established in 1996 with the aim to care for orphaned and destitute children. What began as a part time work among street children with minimal support has today grown into a full-fledged home. Today 126 children call GSH their home which operates from four locations (Talegaon, Pune, Mumbai & Nasik ) in the state of Maharashtra helping kids off the street.

MALAWALI
Medical HIV/AIDS Clinic

A CRY grant issued in 2007 is funding a new Medical Clinic with a capacity of 50 beds in Malawali where injured, malnourished and sick young people will be treated. This project will also include a Home for 25 HIV+ children. Many children with HIV/AIDS are orphaned and cannot access any medical/practical help. Suitable buildings have already been acquired and renovated and, since these pictures were taken, converted and equipped - the programme is due to start shortly.

The team that operates the Medical project will network with other NGOs in Mumbai to help ex-patients acquire vocational skills in order to find employment and permanent housing. This will not only enable many immediate medical needs to be met, but young people without accommodation will find the means to make a new start in life. Furthermore, many children with AIDS will get the treatment they so richly deserve.

Another alternative is to set up a bank standing order (UK residents only) where the charity will also benefit (with tax payers) from GiftAid.
