ABRA de ILOG Education Centre & Health Clinic CRY has recently obtained a grant to support the building of an educational centre and health clinic to cater for the needs of an extremely deprived and isolated community at Abra de Ilog, Occidental Mindoro, Philippines. CRY's Christian partners, Ministries Without Borders have been operating as a registered NGO in the Philippines since 2004, mainly in the slums of Manila and a few other cities. This new project will provide in one overall building, taking 4-6 months to build, an educational facility and a clinic especially focusing on maternity requirements. The education facility will provide a large teaching area of 56 square metres plus library / work room and comfort facilities. The clinic will provide an office, examination room, birthing room, waiting area and comfort facilities.
The local Mangyan and Tagalog communities are extremely poor and generally excluded from government provision socially medically and educationally. Schools are distant, difficult to travel to and they are often too poor to afford required books, uniforms etc. This especially affects the 5-9 years age bracket but also few opportunities exist for young people and adult illiteracy is high. Also mandatory fees for hospital treatment are prohibitive the nearest hospital being 34 km distant, as are the services of professional midwives. Basic medical health checks and treatment is a huge need.
50 children age 5-9 years will receive primary education and skills training programmes will be set up to provide employment opportunities for young adults. An adult literacy programme will also be provided. Medical examinations and provision of medicines for minor illnesses will be provided free of charge. It is expected the Health Authority will begin to use it as a local clinic to do routine minor treatments including surgical procedures. Pregnancies can be monitored and qualified midwives perform deliveries for around an expected 60+ pregnancies annually. If you would like to regularly support this project, you can do this online through the PayPal link below by making regular (recurring) payments of just £3 a month (about 10p per day). Just choose the project from the drop-down list and click the Subscribe button. This can be easily cancelled at anytime by clicking the Unsubscribe button below. Another alternative is to set up a bank standing order (UK residents only) where the charity will also benefit (with tax payers) from GiftAid.
