Initial requests for help in caring for Romanian orphans came through CRY's Romanian church connections. Subsequently CRY made its first purpose to serve the needy in Romania, paying particular attention to the children. Since early 1990, CRY has been involved in various acts of aid and support to Eastern Europe, including placing workers directly into children's homes in Romania. This work has hugely expanded over the years with the charity currently (08/2008) supporting some 29 programmes in 15 countries across 3 continents.

CRY was founded by Martyn Dunsford (church pastor), Christian business people and other Christians working at a senior level in the caring professions - some already involved in visiting Romania as part of a Christian mission to the people and churches there.
