CRY SOUTH AFRICA

CAPE TOWN
Lifestyle and Sexual Health Programme
CRY is supporting this vital Christian based youth education initiative. Cape Town is a beautiful city but on the outskirts there are shanty towns housing something like 300,000 people. Courses are presented in schools and local community youth groups mainly in the 'coloured' Cape Flats area on the outskirts of Cape Town - reclaimed marshland. This area has very high unemployment levels for young people, with grave economic and social disturbance problems. It is projected that possibly up to 50% of teenagers here will die of AIDS.

The "Think Twice" project has been running for a few years and in June 2004 Lindsey Dunsford handed management over to a South African Team, lead by Grace Byron overseen by the Jubilee Church and Bay Church. The current programme for Year Two Children (aged 7) teaches them about HIV/AIDS, Child Abuse and Saying "No" to any physical contact they are not comfortable with and about how to value themselves. The 15-session program is completed in a Term and training, teaching manuals and further support is given to the teachers so that they can teach future classes.

A High School Programme, "Undiluted" is also running throughout schools in South Africa. The programme, aimed at 15/16-year-olds, runs over 2 school terms, teaching about child abuse, pregnancy and HIV/AIDS. The teachers are also trained and supported as with the Year Two programme. Teenagers from the "Undiluted" programme who are prepared to commit to 10 sessions outside of school time are offered a place in a Personal Growth Group where they have the opportunity to discuss any topic. A safe environment is created within their peer group and with 2 members of the Think Twice Team. The programme is having a massive positive impact on the community.

A programme of two terms for Pre-school children (5-year-olds) has also been introduced, similar to the Year Two programme. Work has also started on a programme for Year Ones - the amount of information that is retained by the children is amazing. The programme is presented through games, songs and teaching. The project and the team are becoming highly respected and the South African Government has now committed to ensuring there is teaching about HIV/AIDS in the School Curriculum. It is a significant time for the Project with meetings taking place with the Cape Town Education Authority and their Health Authority.
