JAPANESE WELL VILLAGE School Dormitory for Refugee Children The Karen Burmese people have been subjected to extreme pressure and persecution within Burma with many thousands now living in the jungles on the Thai / Burmese border. Japanese Well Village, Kaichanaburi Province, Thailand (On Myanmar Border), is in a relatively peaceful part of this region where several hundred of the refugees are allowed to live just inside Thailand but with no Thai citizenship status, denied access to schools and other services. They are a traumatised neglected displaced people.
CRY's Christian partner, Mercy Teams International (MTI) have built and operate a school attended at present by 72 children, either orphans or more commonly single parented but with no proper accommodation, many stay and sleep around the school site. In 2007, CRY obtained a substantial grant to provide dormitory accommodation at the school for 25-30 children comprising 5 bedrooms, a kitchen with basic appliances, living area, toilets and showers. On the same school site a 2 roomed dental clinic will be built and equipped.
Unsuitable overcrowded and unhygienic accommodation will be replaced by basic although adequate facilities for 25+ children to sleep and be cared for and thus be able to continue their education, the only hope they have to achieve some future opportunity for themselves. The dental clinic will be able to expand its services to the whole of the village community. This programme was highly recommended to CRY by local Christian doctors Barry and Karen Trewinard from Southampton who visited the project during their two years of service on board the MV Doulos ship operated by OM Ships International.
