STREET OUTREACH KIEV

KIEV
Rescuing Children from the Streets
Without the help available through outreach programmes run by the organisations and individuals of Father's House, MIR Foundation, Victory Church and EZRA Center, street children in Kiev have little hope of living a normal life or perhaps even of surviving. Most are between the ages of 7 - 14. Some are as young as 4 years old.

These comprehensive and effective programmes includes working with children on the streets and helping them with their problems. They are often encouraged to visit drop-in centres where they can eat, wash and receive counselling. Short-term ‘adjustment’ accommodation is provided as the first step towards a life away from the street.

How do local workers help the children?

  • Workers make contact with homeless children in their hiding places, where ever they may be on the "streets."
  • Humanitarian aid is offered at the "feeding station", in the form of food and clothing. Their trust in the workers is inspired through continuing love and provision, showing them that there are no hidden motives to use, hurt, or manipulate them.
  • The social and medical situation is uncovered, then contact is made with the Ukrainian State Service for joint decisions concerning relevant issues and needs.
  • Children are given medical and dental help at clinics and hospitals.
  • Children are taught about personal hygiene and respect for one's body.
  • Activities are offered to renew their dignity and childhood, which were robbed from them, such as: Life skills; Creative Activities ; Spiritual Guidance; Sports; Games.
  • Father's House and VCC work with children in state-run shelters & provide staff to care for them.
CRY's contribution is shared funding of these projects. A CRY fostering and supported lodgings programme is being considered.
