South Sudan is the worlds newest country, but since its establishment in 2011 has faced intense fighting, drought and hardship, and the children of South Sudan are growing up within one of the toughest environments on the planet.

Since the outbreak of fighting in December 2013, humanitarian needs in South Sudan have escalated to alarming levels. In 2017, the worst drought in decades has brought South Sudan to the brink of famine. Half of the population — many of them children — face emergency levels of hunger, and more than a million risk starvation.

Education is vital. Not only does it transform the lives of the children but it can also transform communities for future generations- a child born to an educated mother has a 50 per cent higher chance of survival and educated parents are more likely to send their children to school.

That is why CRY is so thrilled to be transforming the future of children in Kapoeta, in the south east of the country. With the support of the Jersey Overseas Aid Committee, CRY has built a school that serves 400 children, giving them not only an education but nutritious meals, regular health care and good sanitation facilities. In addition we also support an existing school in the area, committing to support 20 pupils (15 of them girls) and a youth worker.
