Life for young people in Elbasan (50 miles from the capital Tirana) is difficult. The city has high unemployment and high levels of poverty, especially within the Roma and Egyptian population, meaning that the most vulnerable children are often having to take on responsibility for income generation for their families. These young people are having to spend their days begging on the streets, preventing them from attending school and having the safety, security and fun that other children gain from education.

The Gate of Hope Centre was set up by the Joshua Mission Christian Fellowship specifically to help meet this need. It is focussed on meeting the social, health and education needs of these vulnerable and isolated children.

CRY has been supporting the Gate of Hope centre since July 2012. This incredible centre provides a safe place for young people to meet with 35 children aged between 8-15 coming together every Tuesday and Saturday to eat, play games and talk. The centre aims to build these young people’s confidence, allowing them to feel loved, respected and valued.

The Gate of Hope seeks to provide basic education so that children who are out of the mainstream school system can gain the knowledge and confidence they need to rejoin school. The centre also buys school supplies for these children, so that no child is prevented from getting an education by their lack of income. The children get a nutritious meal, basic health care, and a warm and safe community to support them through their tough adolescence. It truly is a place of hope for the children who attend.
