The orphanage cares for children who have either been abandoned or whose parents have died of AIDS. Each day they feed 300 but currently only have the ability to sleep 50 – 60. The other 250 or so children are farmed out to local families in the evenings to sleep but return each morning as the families are not in a position financially to feed them. CRY has a lot of involvement with orphanages and children's homes around the world and the orphanage at Mbeya ranks amongst the very worst we have seen. Up to 12 children sleep in a set of bunk beds (6 per bunk sleeping horizontally) and few of the beds have mattresses. Food is in short supply and on occasions the children have to go two or three days with nothing to eat. CRY is seeking to build a new dormitory for sleeping 50 children, purchasing land nearby for farming and to buy a flour mill.
