What do we love?

Mauritania has a rich traditional lifestyle, where hospitality and community are at the heart of daily life. Society moves to a peaceful rhythm, with tea ceremonies shared under the stars and meals like thieboudienne and mechoui offering bold, comforting flavours. From the silence of the dunes to the warmth of its people, Mauritania’s charm lies in its deep-rooted culture and quiet beauty.

What are the challenges?

Children in Mauritania face a range of significant challenges, often rooted in poverty and a struggling economy. Many families live below the poverty line, limiting access to education, healthcare, and basic nutrition. Refugee children, especially those fleeing conflict in neighbouring countries, face instability and a lack of secure shelter or schooling. Street children and orphans are particularly vulnerable, often exposed to exploitation, malnutrition, and poor health conditions. In rural areas, children may be kept out of school to help with farming or household chores, and child labour remains a concern. These overlapping hardships make it difficult for many children in Mauritania to thrive or reach their full potential.

What are our partners doing?

They work among some of the most vulnerable communities in Mauritania, particularly focusing on children and women. Their initiatives include providing education, shelter for orphans, multiple feeding programmes, and micro-finance grants to help individuals break free from the cycle of poverty.

CRY is specifically supporting their three children's feeding programmes, along with vital ongoing work with orphans and street children, focusing on providing food, medicine, clothing, and school fees.
