What do we love?

Sri Lanka is full of colour, character, and charm. From its tea-covered hills to bustling local markets and coastal towns, the island offers a unique blend of tradition and natural beauty. Its people are known for their warmth and generosity.

What are the challenges?

Sri Lanka continues to face challenges in education, healthcare, and economic opportunity, especially in rural and underserved areas. Many families struggle to access reliable services, and children are sometimes at risk of exploitation or dropping out of school to support household income. Since the end of the war, many children have been abandoned, orphaned, or abused — in some cases, sexually. More support is needed to protect their rights, provide safe environments, and help them build a brighter, more secure future.

What are our partners doing?

Jaffna Children’s Home was established in 2003, in Jaffna, and has become a place of refuge, safety, and transformation for some of Sri Lanka’s most vulnerable girls. Despite the severe challenges during the war years, they continued their mission. Today, they support 24 children from a wide range of difficult backgrounds — including orphans, those abandoned or living in poverty, children from single-parent homes, and those who have suffered mental, physical, or sexual abuse. Every child is referred through the courts and probation services. Our partners believe every child deserves the chance to grow up in a loving environment where they are treated with dignity and compassion. Their goal is to provide not just shelter, but a sense of family, restoring young lives through education and skills training so that each child can enter society with confidence and hope.

They meet all essential needs: nutritious meals, clothing, medical care, education, and school supplies — along with opportunities for extracurricular growth in sports, music, and the arts.

They are deeply encouraged when children go on to thrive. One of their previous beneficiaries graduated from medical school in China and now serves as a doctor in Batticaloa. Others are studying at the University of Jaffna and the Ramanathan Music Academy. Some excel in sports; all find renewed joy and belonging. Each child has a story — like Dilakshana, abandoned during the war; or Jeevitha, who lost her father and was left behind when her mother remarried. Or those who have survived unthinkable abuse. Today, they are no longer statistics — they are part of a family, most loved and cared for.

With CRY's support, they continue this vital work, offering not just a safe place, but a real future to children who need it most.
